Pros and Cons of Independent Living

Pros:

1. Freedom and Autonomy:

Independent living provides you with the freedom and autonomy to plan your activities and daily routines according to your preferences. Travel is easier knowing your home is protected from crime etc. No arranging a house sitter or having someone get the mail.

2. Social Opportunities:

Independent living provides opportunities for you to participate in social activities and make new friends. Often there are planned social activities allowing you to find people with similar interests quickly.

3. Maintenance Free Living:

Maintenance services such as housekeeping, lawn care, and other amenities are often provided to residents, which can relieve you of worry regarding such tasks. Some also have garden areas etc that you can still use to enjoy your hobbies.

4. Wellness Programs:

Independent living facilities often offer wellness activities and exercise programs to keep you active and healthy.

5. Safety and Security:

Independent living communities have staff who monitor residents’ safety and offer emergency response services.

Cons:

1. Cost:

Independent living can be expensive, depending on the type of community and location. Tyoically over $2,000 a month. This does include most of your utlities etc however you will still need to look into renters insurance to cover your belonging.

2. Limited healthcare services:

Independent living facilities may lack some healthcare services, leading you to have to seek external healthcare. (Some however have a doctor or nurse practioner who come on a schedule or have daily hours.)

3. Limited Assistance:

Residents of independent living communities have limited assistance and may require additional care, which may require moving to another community. Some communities have multiple levels of care so the move is just to another wing or allow you to bring in care to assist in your apartment.

4. Rules and Regulations:

Independent living communities may have strict rules and regulations that may not suit every individual. Many have non-smoking campuses not just buildings. Covid-19 also gave a look into how much control they had in restrictions.

5. Isolation:

While independent living communities offer many activities and social opportunities, you may still feel isolated due to not having close family, friends, or close relationships in the facility.
