Real Estate and aging..seems like a strange connection to some. Truthfully they go hand in hand. We spend most of our lives in our office, car or home. We arrange our office to suit our needs, we pick a car based on our needs and the same with our home.
As we go through life and spend time on this earth our bodies tend to “age” as society puts it. We become “old” (humph). Regardless how we feel about aging. The truth is our bodies change and we have difference wants, preferences and needs for comfort now. They will continue to change in the future. Making an aging plan, helps address these proactively so you get to age where you want and hopefully how you want. (medically allowing of course) Let’s get to the big questions:
What is an aging plan?
Deciding where you want to age. Do you want to move some where warm? Maybe have two homes and live in the summer where it is cooler, but head to warm weather when winter hits. Do you want to stay in your family home that is where you raised your children? Do you want to move to be around others your same age?
Deciding how you want to age. This one gets tricky I don’t mean picking your health problems (NONE PLEASE!), but instead do you want make a move and know you never have to move again other than rooms? Do you want to bring all health care to you and never move? Do you want to move as your health needs change.
When. Now this isn’t when you want age. We don’t get to pick how fast time passes by us or even how quickly our bodies deterioate really. We do get to decide if we want make a ove now, or plan on moving when a certain triggering event happens. Perhaps you want to have an emergency aging plan in place. Everything is modified for you to age in place, but in the event a health emergency happens and you can’t return home- Your wishes are spelled out to preference for facilities and care.
So WHY is it important?
The biggest complaint and factor in aging is the LOSS OF CONTROL. Our well meaning kids, our rapidly changed situation do to a medical event, a death of our spouse or loved one. When the unexpected happens, not having a plan can mean you lose your VOICE, your CHOICE in what happens to the way you WANTed to AGE.
Why does a real estate agent care?
I watched my grandparents struggle without guidance from their agent or senior community. Each had a goal- sell the house- get a client. Neither was “out to get” my grandparents. It was just neither had training or understanding about the complicated decisions and options that should be open to seniors. Had they created a plan before Alzihemers made decisions for them. They would have known what came next. Instead of a middle of the night frantic transfer. A rush of decisions and overwhelm hoping it was the right thing.
