The changing landscape (not just our bodies..)

As we age, it isn’t just out minds focusing on what our legacy is that changes things. Our bodies stop cooperating as well. While life doesn’t have a pause or instafix button we can still do things that we have more time for now like gardening. BUT… what about when we can’t keep up as well and we want to keep the yard nice etc.. Well below are a few tips on adapting your landscape to accomodate for that stubborn body..

1. Cut down on maintenance: Use low-maintenance plants, and avoid those that require a lot of watering, cutting, or pruning. Switch to synthetic grass or other ground covers that don’t need mowing. Install automatic irrigation systems or drip hoses to minimize the amount of time you spend watering.

2. Create easy access: Design your garden so that it’s more accessible to you. Lay a path that is easy to walk on or install stepping stones to make your garden safer and more accessible. Have raised garden beds or planters with a little seating area so that you can sit and garden at a comfortable height.

3. Use ergonomic tools: Make sure you own ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on your body. Tools like lightweight pruning shears or weeding tools with long handles can help ensure you don’t strain your muscles as you work.

4. Lighten up: Use landscape lighting so that your yard is illuminated even after the sun goes down. Motion-activated lighting that’s affordable will help make sure you’re safe whenever you’re walk around outside, and also deter would-be intruders.

5. Create outdoor living spaces: To enjoy your garden, create areas for sitting or entertaining. Set up a comfortable, shaded seating area or install a bench that you can relax on.

6. Hire professionals to help: Finally, don’t hesitate to hire pros to assist you with your landscaping needs. Professional gardeners, landscapers or home health aides can assist with digging, planting and maintaining your garden.

As you age, adapting your yard to your needs is very important so that you can enjoy your outdoor space to the fullest without any stress or strain.
